Chemistry and ingredients of nail gels

Gel performance comes from a complete formula—not from one fashionable ingredient claim. Learn what the main ingredient groups do and how to check a product responsibly.

How UV/LED nail gels work

Professional nail gels typically combine reactive resins and monomers, photoinitiators, pigments or effect materials, and supporting additives. Under the specified lamp, the photoinitiator starts polymerisation and the liquid system forms a cured coating.

Curing depends on the full system: product layer, lamp compatibility, exposure time and the manufacturer’s instructions. A surface that feels hard is not, by itself, proof of complete curing.

Read the product, not the slogan

  • Check the complete ingredient list and label
  • Follow the specified lamp and cure time
  • Avoid all skin contact during application
  • Use professional-only products only in their intended setting

Main ingredient groups

What you may see on an ingredient list

Oligomers and monomers

They form the structure and influence viscosity, flexibility, adhesion and removal. Acrylate or methacrylate ingredients may sensitise when uncured product repeatedly contacts skin.

Photoinitiators

They absorb lamp energy and start curing. The correct lamp wavelength and exposure matter, and applicable ingredient restrictions can change over time.

Pigments and effects

Colourants, glitter and magnetic or pearl effects create the finish. Dark or highly pigmented layers can need especially careful, thin application and correct curing.

HEMA-free explained

“HEMA-free” is useful information, but not a safety guarantee

A HEMA-free product excludes one named ingredient. It can still contain other reactive acrylates, so the same precautions remain important. “HEMA-free”, “TPO-free”, “vegan” or “cruelty-free” also do not prove that a cosmetic is legally placed on the EU market.

EU compliance is a separate check

For EU sale, verify the Responsible Person, required safety assessment and product file, notification where applicable, ingredient restrictions, warnings, batch information and compliant labelling. Start with our product checklist and EU compliance overview.
